Thursday Cheese Curds: Bashaud Breeland could be a steal for the Packers
It was a move not many were sure would happen just a year ago , but Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst pulled it off and gave his secondary some much needed relief.Green Bay on Tuesday signed free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland to replace Davon House who is now on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.Breeland was one of the top cornerbacks on the free agent market just a few months ago, but had his contract offer from the Carolina Panthers rescinded after he suffered a cut on his foot in the Dominican Republic that ended up being infected. The injury was severe enough that teams didn’t want to sign him until the Packers did two days ago. The move adds veteran experience to a secondary that outside of Tramon Williams is very young and raw. Breeland also is a nice insurance policy to have while second-year corner Kevin King continues to recover from a groin injury.Breeland practiced this week but his availability for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills is up in the air at this point. Regardless, Green Bay May have gotten a steal by signing a player of his caliber at the veteran minimum so his play will be worth watching going forward. You can read more on Breeland plus what might be the headline of the year in today’s cheese curds.Baushaud Breeland seeks fresh start with the Green Bay Packers—PackersNews.comWho would have thought a golf cart could cost someone $24 million? Well, it happened to Breeland and you know he’ll be plenty motivated to prove he’s still worth it. Uncommon opponent not only challenge Bills present—Packers.comJosh Allen almost became a joke in the lead up to the draft this spring, but he’s starting to prove people wrong. He’s very athletic and shredded the Minnesota Vikings’ defense last week. Mike Pettine and company need to be at attention Sunday.Jordy Nelson gone but wide receivers not the problem for the Packers—Wisconsin State JournalNelson went off for the Raiders last week while the Packers’ receivers struggled mightily against Washington. Don’t let one game fool you: the Packers did make the right move, says Tom Oates.Aaron Rodgers’ practice absence having ill effects—NFL.comRodgers runs the show, both on the playing field and practice field. Not having him out there is having an impact says head coach Mike McCarthy and could almost be interpreted as a slam on backups DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle.Kayaker blessed by a seal, slapped in the face with an octopus—The VergeIf this isn’t the headline of the year and a great metaphor for the Packers’ season thus far , I don’t know what is. The video is crazy.Packers-Chiefs Fantasy Reaction: Allison & Jones look like starters, J’Mon Moore struggles The fourth preseason game is more or less the last opportunity for the unproven to make the final roster. Starters don’t often get the play here unless they’re facing a suspension to start the year or haven’t gotten the in-game reps they needed due to injury. Against the Chiefs, some bubble players for the Green Bay Packers got to make their last case for a roster. Others have proved to us what they’re been showing us all preseason. We take a look at the final preseason trends for fantasy players on the Packers:Trending UpGeronimo Allison, WRAfter last week’s preseason game, Allison put his name back on the fantasy map. Against the Chiefs, he may have solidified himself as someone to take a flier on. He had one catch for 31 yards on one target. He beat the corner pretty handily and, despite how well some rookies have played, solidified himself as the primary third receiver on the team. Geronimo’s ADP is in the late 12th round for PPR leagues so he’ll likely be available for your last few picks. If Davante Adams sees a lot of attention from defenses this season Authentic JK Scott Jersey , Allison could benefit.Aaron Jones, RBAgainst the Chiefs, Jones was consistently eking out yardage on runs that looked to be going nowhere. He was explosive and displayed his talent of knowing when to bounce the run to the outside. These are things that I don’t think Jamaal Williams can do and that’s what makes Jones the most talented back on the roster. Jones had 34 yards and a touchdown on the ground, but also added three catches for 21 yards. That bump in the passing game is nice to see and essential to his fantasy value.Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WRAfter disappearing against the Raiders, MVS jumped back onto the radar against the Chiefs. He brought in all three of his targets for 41 yards. Valdes-Scantling feels like a lock to make the 53-man roster and could be the field stretcher that will open up the Packers’ offense. He won’t provide much value in redraft leagues, but if he’s sitting on the free agent list for dynasty leagues, he’s worth grabbing.Trending Down J’Mon Moore , WRAfter appearing to mend some of his drop issues, Moore only brought in two catches on seven targets. Now, it was a rough night for Tim Boyle throwing the ball so not all these balls were catchable. Drops have plagued Moore since his days at Missouri and there’s not a whole lot that’ll make Packers fans pull their hair out more. So whether or not his mouthguard is indicating a run or pass play, I would say Moore’s on the bubble.
